Metal dome switches are switch devices which use metal domes as a core component to control the on/off of a circuit.
Structure
Metal dome switches are usually composed of metal domes, contact points, housing, and connection terminal.

Metal domes usually have a certain elasticity and recovery force, can deform when subjected to external force, and quickly return to their original shape after the external force disappears.
Contacts Points made of electrically conductive material are typically located under or around the dome. When the dome is pressed, it makes contact with the contact point, thereby energizing the circuit.
Housing which is made of plastic, metal and other materials with a certain degree of strength and insulating properties used to protect the internal dome and contact points.
Pins or connecting terminals are used to connect the dome switch to external circuitry. The pins can be metal pins soldered to the circuit board or terminals connected to the external circuitry by plug-ins.

Types
Usually there are four shapes of metal dome switches, but we can also design and manufacture custom shaped metal dome to meet your application's needs.
Circular Metal Domes or Round Metal Dome keymat
They are round in shape and can only be used in circuit boards or precision switches with two or more layers.
Four-leg Tactile Metal Dome Keypad
Four-legged domes designed specifically for mounting on single or double sided PCB’s, FPC circuits, and silver flex membranes where traces of negative and positive can be designed under the dome on the same side of circuits.
Triangle Shape Metal Dome Button
Triangular shaped metal domes designed for mounting on single or double sided printed circuit boards, FPC circuits, and silver flex membranes where a via is run through the circuit board.
Oval or Rectangle Metal Domes Keyboards
Oblong metal domes are perfect for applications that require a low profile switch on an overly populated circuit board. They also may be used in long, narrow spaces that cannot accommodate other domes.
There are three main types of dome analyzed in terms of material.
Stainless Steel Dome Switches
Nickel Silver Dome Switches Buttons
Gold Plated Conductive Single Detailed Dome
Stainless steel dome switches are known for their durability and resilience. These switches are commonly found in keyboards, remote controls, and automotive control panels.
Nickel silver dome switches combine excellent conductivity with corrosion resistance. They are widely used in industrial control systems, medical devices, and consumer electronics.
Gold-plated dome switches not only offer durability but also add a touch of luxury and visual appeal. The gold plating enhances the switches’ electrical properties and provides a low contact resistance, making them suitable for high-end consumer electronics, automotive applications, and aerospace systems.

Benefits
Metal dome is an efficient way to realise the conductivity of keypad and PCB. The unique shape of metal domes make themselves could integrate into smaller and thinner packages. They deliver stable electrical performance with low resistance, ensuring efficient signal transmission. Their metal construction offers resistance to EMI and harsh environments. These switches are aesthetically pleasing, easy to integrate, and have a quick response time, making them versatile for various applications across industries.
