Butyl rubber is close to impermeable to gases, which is why it lines tyres and seals pressure systems. It also damps vibration well and resists weathering, ozone and many chemicals.
It is slow to cure and does not blend well with unsaturated rubbers, so it tends to be used where its barrier property is specifically required.
