Transfer moulding for parts with inserts, tight tolerances or geometry that compression cannot fill cleanly.
Transfer moulding sits between compression and injection. A preform is loaded into a pot, then forced through sprues into closed cavities. The cavity is closed before the rubber arrives, so dimensional control and insert positioning are much better than compression can achieve.
It is the process to use when a part carries a metal insert, when the wall sections are awkward, or when flash on the sealing face has to be minimal.
Transfer leaves material in the pot and the sprues, so scrap per shot is higher than compression.
Tooling costs more than a compression tool of the same size. On low volume programmes that difference can outweigh the cycle time gain, and we will say so before you commit to a tool.
