Silicone holds its elasticity across a wider temperature band than any other elastomer we mould, and it resists UV, ozone and weathering almost indefinitely. It is physiologically inert, which is why it dominates medical and food contact work.
Its weaknesses are real and worth knowing: it tears more easily than organic rubbers, it abrades faster, and it swells in some non polar solvents. If a part will be dragged across a hard edge in service, silicone is usually the wrong answer.
